For cheering with us on the soccer fields. For those ready smiles. For holding doors open. For the abundance of summer produce from your gardens. For those bottles of honey and maple syrup, those bushels of blueberries. For those candles you made and shared. For that hand you placed on my shoulder. For making it alright. <div style="text-align: justify;">
In my obsessive trawling of the internet for pretty homes I've come across and written about countless gorgeous spaces. In all these rooms, while there are always some elements that appeal to me, there are some features I w<span style="font-family: inherit;">ould tweak out if I actually had to live in them. Not so in the spaces designed by Shivani. Her style really resonates with me--perhaps it's because she's a D</span>elhi girl like me, perhaps it's because she's traveled India extensively, perhaps it's because she has that deep-seated appreciation for Indian design. Whatever the reason, her spaces (and words) really speak to me--she manages to infuse traditional Indian design into contemporary settings without making it appear over-the-top or kitschy: real spaces for living in, not set designs for a photoshoot, to put it bluntly. Do you see yourself living in these rooms? Take a number, because I'm moving right in! (I wish!) :)</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BrPwZZZXUH8/UKe_eCg8b9I/AAAAAAAAC8g/UPn9-BYAxwg/s1600/Of_Peacocks_and_Paisleys_Portfolio_Shivani_Dogra_chaise_lounge.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="610" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BrPwZZZXUH8/UKe_eCg8b9I/AAAAAAAAC8g/UPn9-BYAxwg/s640/Of_Peacocks_and_Paisleys_Portfolio_Shivani_Dogra_chaise_lounge.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">I can totally see myself curled up on that chaise lounge with a good book!</span></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%;">Shivani had this to say about her style as an interior designer:</span><br />
<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<span style="font-family: Arial,sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%;"><span style="font-family: Arial,sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%;">"I love colour
and the dramatic effect it has on moods and space. For every project that
I undertake, it’s important for me to wander around its environs a bit,
explore the space I’m redoing, learn about its inhabitants –their
stories, its story. Much like a good novel, the space becomes a
world that I inhabit for the length of a project and miss when it’s
over. I love taking rooms from drab and unexciting to full of life. I’d
much rather source locally and draw inspiration from
India’s rich arts
and crafts traditions, with their unabashed love for colour. I usually
incorporate the outdoors as part of an interior scheme, matching
and harmonizing colours with the natural
surroundings."</span> </span></blockquote>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hello my loves! Do I have a treat for you today--you're absolutely going to love this home tour. It's full of style and loads and loads of vibrant, mouth-watering color. We're traveling to Delhi today to catch up with interior designer <a href="http://shivanidogra.in/">Shivani Dogra</a> and peep into her gorgeous one-bedroom apartment. There are so many things I love about her apartment, the foremost being that her color palette was inspired by the lush bougainvillaea growing outside her window. That has to be the best source of inspiration I've ever heard of. I also love that she transformed the space on a budget (her <a href="http://shoestringstyle.wordpress.com/">blog</a> is named <a href="http://shoestringstyle.wordpress.com/">shoestring style</a>! :) ) and a little (okay, a lot of!) elbow grease. And truckloads of style. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EQ5qZsf3IyQ/UJp2kTwQi8I/AAAAAAAAC6g/2ReW8HvzTSI/s1600/Of_Peacocks_and_Paisleys_Home_Tour_Shivani_reading_nook.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EQ5qZsf3IyQ/UJp2kTwQi8I/AAAAAAAAC6g/2ReW8HvzTSI/s1600/Of_Peacocks_and_Paisleys_Home_Tour_Shivani_reading_nook.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm actually going to turn this space over to Shivani now, because, as you'll see, interior decorating is just one of her many talents. It is a pleasure for me to read her eloquent description of the process behind decorating this apartment, and I'm sure you're going to enjoy it just as much.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
(We're going to start with the grungy "before" pictures, because I feel that you can't truly appreciate the beauty of her space before you've seen them! I'm sure you will excuse me if I only post the smallest version of the pictures available! Magic is what this girl has brought to this space.Take it away Shivani!)</div>
<br />

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i><span style="font-family: Arial,sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%;">"This was the state
of the flat when the landlady first showed it to me. It fit my slim
budget and, though completely decrepit, its potential shined
through. In my long search for rented accommodation, I’d seen many
places that some might call more appealing than this one. Yet I chose
this flat over the rest. I was somehow certain that hidden under the
neglected eye sore before me at the time, was a wonderfully
inviting home."</span></i></blockquote>

<br />
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i><span style="font-family: Arial,sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%;">"After clearing the
place out and cleaning, cleaning, cleaning, I got down to the fun
part. The first step was choosing a theme for the space. I wanted
something cheery and inviting at the end of a long work day. And it
was imperative that the theme went well with the surroundings
outside. I had a large, shady jamun tree just beyond the window by my bed
and masses of vibrant bougainvillea all along the back of the
building. A crisp green and cool white combination seemed
perfect for the bedroom
– vivid, but not too loud, soft enough to blend in gently
with the outdoors when the windows were open.<br />
<br />The furniture came
in bits and pieces. I didn’t have a ‘plan’ all
sketched out, but
worked from instinct and feeling whenever a piece came my way. The
futon was bought reasonably (Rs 6000) from someone leaving the
country. The cupboard came with the apartment, but in a
mousy brown, so I
used the left-over paint from the doing up the walls, bought a
couple of tins more and repainted the cupboard, giving it a distressed
finish with wax and some sandpaper. The side tables
were bought at a
thrift store and the desk was my grandmother’s. I reupholstered a
dusty chair with an old bedcover, using what remained to cover a pinup
board just above it so they matched.</span></i><br />
<i><span style="font-family: Arial,sans-serif; font-size: 11pt; line-height: 115%;"><br />
The windows needed
curtains, but the ones I tried at first—striped in blue, green, and
purple—didn’t look quite right to me. I replaced them with colourful
grass mats that I could easily roll up for more light."</span></i></blockquote>

Sunday. The chest of drawers was from another thrift store in
Okhla. The blue door was the result of a long summer
afternoon that had
me locked indoors. And the pictures are from a work trip when I travelled
down the Ganges. What I love about this space is that it tells my
story. I like a good adventure and the jobs I’ve had have given me the
chance to do just that—travel across the remotest
corners of this
vast country, exploring and discovering people and places. Almost
everything that I displayed in my flat was picked up on one of these
journeys through dusty lanes of forgotten towns or the
bustling markets of
one of our great cities."</span> </i></div>

In my brief interaction with her, Shivani's personality came off as warm and cheerful. I think this space really reflects her "aura". Lime green+Prussian blue+Rani pink. Did someone just say "<i>cheery and inviting</i>"? :) Isn't it amazing how color can transform a space? Also, love the open shelving. Why hide those pretty lentils in a closet? :)</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
You and I have been waiting a long time for this post, which only makes it that much sweeter, don't you think? This home tour brings me back full circle......Kamini's was <a href="http://gb73.blogspot.com/2010/06/home-tour-kaminis-home-in-seattle.html">the first home</a> I ever featured on P&P. I mentioned that day that <a href="http://saffronandsilk.blogspot.com/">Kamini </a>was a person I'd love to know in the real world (and even though we still haven't met in person) she's since become one of my closest friends, and that in itself can justify the existence of this blog. :) This home tour also celebrates Kamini's return to a city she loves, so full-circle on that as well. ( I actually have a lot to say here, but it's threatening to get super-emotional, so I'm going to <strike>zip it</strike> save it for another post.) I'm sure you've already read about the epic move, but in case you've been on <i>sanyaas</i>, anthills and all, here <a href="http://saffronandsilk.blogspot.com/2012/07/40-containers-and-all.html">are a</a> <a href="http://saffronandsilk.blogspot.com/2012/03/warning-wordy-post-ahead-get-your.html">few</a> <a href="http://saffronandsilk.blogspot.com/2012/04/big-move.html">links </a>to bring you up to speed!</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Okay, enough talking for now, let the drool-fest begin! We'll start with the entry, with it's stunning rug and painted table--we've seen the entry table before, but I think it looks right at home in it's new space, don't you? Love those turned legs--they remind me of those lacquered wooden toys that we used to play with as kids. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-otMtlG4Nc2U/T_yaWT-J8xI/AAAAAAAACzg/px3zLL-Pd1Q/s1600/Entry.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-otMtlG4Nc2U/T_yaWT-J8xI/AAAAAAAACzg/px3zLL-Pd1Q/s1600/Entry.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As Kamini describes it, this floor of their home is one long rectangular space, with an open floor plan; it houses the kitchen, the dining space and the family room. There's also space for a perfect sunlit reading nook. I love the way Kamini has created functional "rooms", with the skillful use of (her gorgeous collection!) of rugs. The warm wood, paired with those stunning rugs really cozies up the space!</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The dining room and kitchen island--love love love those block-print bar stool covers. The dining table with more stunning legs on display. You can see portions of the reading nook in the background. And you've just got to love all that gorgeous green growing in the backyard.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--jjBkPVMDaw/T_ykDzEcNDI/AAAAAAAACzs/7GVqXaMVjvA/s1600/DiningBarstools.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/--jjBkPVMDaw/T_ykDzEcNDI/AAAAAAAACzs/7GVqXaMVjvA/s640/DiningBarstools.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The reading nook, with her father-in-law's favorite chair, a comfy footstool, a fireplace for the colder months, plenty of natural light, and her little "temple" which holds cherished family heirlooms like her grandfather's ivory box and bell, incense holder, water jar and a set of wooden spoons that have been used by the family priest for over 50 years. A frankincense holder hangs next to the window, completing her little sanctuary. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The family room is nestled right between the reading nook and the kitchen. It's full of color! We see a lot of old favorites, including the <a href="http://saffronandsilk.blogspot.com/2010/10/diy-ii-and-mystery-box.html">treasure trunk she painted</a> (major talent!). There's the daybed, with it's jolt of vibrant color, a gorgeous lamp to read under and the huge copper pot that holds extra cushions. And then there's the coffee table with it's beautiful embroidered tapestry providing the perfect backdrop for amber glass and lacquered wood. Sigh.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zuTnaIc_7MU/T_y51ztjooI/AAAAAAAAC0U/12bF3PnTOKg/s1600/Daybed.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zuTnaIc_7MU/T_y51ztjooI/AAAAAAAAC0U/12bF3PnTOKg/s640/Daybed.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>

<br />
The formal living room is set off the entryway, boasting more reading nooks, and a cozy grouping of poufs and traditional chairs to get the conversation going! I can just imagine this house full of laughter and animated conversations! Oh the parties that you'll have! :)<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qn9HY9B_ZG8/T_y8KsvbXAI/AAAAAAAAC0k/aWnYOZR7hvc/s1600/LivingRoom.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qn9HY9B_ZG8/T_y8KsvbXAI/AAAAAAAAC0k/aWnYOZR7hvc/s640/LivingRoom.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Love that mirror frame! And those poufs look so inviting..... <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j4maNSs90Jc/T_y8LKbXj-I/AAAAAAAAC0s/6tV501MaaGQ/s1600/LivingRoom2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-j4maNSs90Jc/T_y8LKbXj-I/AAAAAAAAC0s/6tV501MaaGQ/s640/LivingRoom2.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Another reading nook, featuring Kamini's favorite new chair! You can read all about it <a href="http://saffronandsilk.blogspot.com/2012/03/warning-wordy-post-ahead-get-your.html">here</a>. You can also see the edge of the coffee table and the coasters she mentions in her post in the picture below.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Vh6gkSnfb7M/T_y8PpVyyyI/AAAAAAAAC00/VTTnCG8Esm4/s1600/ReadingNookLR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Vh6gkSnfb7M/T_y8PpVyyyI/AAAAAAAAC00/VTTnCG8Esm4/s640/ReadingNookLR.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
And of course, there's the art. Oh the art. Most of the paintings you've seen on the walls of Kamini's home are her own work.The sandblasted glass artwork you see next to the silver lamp in the picture above was made by her as part of an assignment for design school. <br />
<br />
Her home is full of colorful, thoughtful little vignettes, touches that suggest that this home is loved, and lived in.......<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Zcsc-4cAqP0/T_y_bI8xfgI/AAAAAAAAC1A/-97wfzmOono/s1600/Bangles.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Zcsc-4cAqP0/T_y_bI8xfgI/AAAAAAAAC1A/-97wfzmOono/s1600/Bangles.jpg" /></a></div>
Her colorful collection of glass bangles, as much a work of art displayed on the wall as they are on the wrists.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-57uNxCDaQa0/T_y_zzMRlSI/AAAAAAAAC1I/sWmPTv7f9qY/s1600/SpiceCorner.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-57uNxCDaQa0/T_y_zzMRlSI/AAAAAAAAC1I/sWmPTv7f9qY/s640/SpiceCorner.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
The spice corner, there's a story behind the traditional spice box, I'm sure!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hLp80hnI8NE/T_zAWrEaohI/AAAAAAAAC1Q/xwPgSXaRvtE/s1600/WindowsillPlanters.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hLp80hnI8NE/T_zAWrEaohI/AAAAAAAAC1Q/xwPgSXaRvtE/s640/WindowsillPlanters.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
All lined up! Her tiny succulent garden! :) <br />
<br />
Gentle reader, I hope you enjoyed reading this post as much as I enjoyed writing it! Kamini has only just settled in, she hasn't lived in this house for more that a few weeks and already has it looking like a home. :) Knowing her, I can only imagine how much there is still left to uncover. I hope she will continue to inspire and the posts on her home (and on her blog!) will keep on flowing.....<br />
<br />
Kamini, thank you for opening your beautiful home to us. It was an honor to feature your home here.<br />

Hear that? that's the sound of me opening the squeaky doors to this poor neglected blog. That's me in the corner (no, not losing<span style="font-size: x-small;">*</span> anything, really) just fighting off the cobwebs, throwing back the curtains, and *<i>aaah-choooo</i>* lifting off the dust-covers. Careful with that dust, it'll get in everywhere! Holy $^!*. <i><b>About time</b></i> someone stepped back in here and cleaned things up. Grumble. I blink my eyes for <i>one second</i> and this blog's going to ruins.... let's just fix it with a pretty picture or two, shall we?</div>

There. <b>Much </b>better. :)<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Yup, I'm back. From where you might ask? the not-so-glamorous answer: nowhere in particular. :( I just had a bad case of blogger burnout so be gentle with me, please? It really has been ages (okay, closer to four months. five.), and I missed blogging. I know I should probably give some explanation, but why go there now? maybe later?</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Right now, presuming there's still someone out there (hello? anyone?), why don't we get the conversation started? It's really been ages I have so much catching up to do.........I hope I'll see you here on the blog. Do drop in and tell me how you're doing. :)<br />

Pinned by me on <a href="http://ofpeacocksandpaisleys.tumblr.com/">my Tumblr</a> this morning. :)</div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Found this picture this morning, while trawling Tumblr........that potato-rosemary pizza looked so tempting, I decided to make it for our saturday brunch. As I type this, the pizza dough is in the oven, rising. The pantry has been raided, I had baby red potatoes and fresh rosemary on hand. Two garlic cloves have been crushed and doused in olive oil and are sitting in a small bowl next to the pizza dough....In about an hour's time, I'll be ready to assemble the pizza. :) </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are several recipes and many iterations of the potato-rosemary-garlic pizza out there. I'm pretty much eyeballing everything and going with my gut, but in case you're interested, you can find some good ones <a href="http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/tyler-florence/bacon-potato-rosemary-and-fontina-pizza-recipe/index.html">here</a>, <a href="http://tastefoodblog.com/2010/01/23/potato-rosemary-garlic-white-pizza/">here </a>and <a href="http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Potato-Sage-and-Rosemary-Pizza-237307">here</a>.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On the weekends, I like to keep things simple, opting for a quick brunch for the day and a nice dinner at night. My brunch favorites: parathas top the list, in every possible permutation and combination; some days it's upmas of various types (semolina/cracked wheat/bambino noodle) loaded with veggies, with a side of hard boiled eggs; sometimes it's sandwiches (panini-pressed or cold) served with salads....</div>
<br />
Do you cook on the weekends? (I know many families in which the mom takes the weekend off! :) ) Does brunch figure in your weekend plans? What are your favorites?<br />
<br />
Hope you're having a good weekend,<br />

<i>Update: Thought I'd add a pretty picture of the outcome........here you go! There's blogging in real time for you, LOL! :) (PS: the pizza's already vanished.)</i><br />

The past couple of weeks have been brimming over with good tidings. In the space of these two weeks, we celebrated our ninth anniversary and my birthday(!) and there were many happy little surprises in store for me....I received the news that my little blog had been featured in an article in the latest edition of <a href="http://edition.pagesuite-professional.co.uk/launch.aspx?referral=other&refresh=Et501Je4Fx31&PBID=71fc0875-84eb-4a27-b420-073e1cf02b3d&skip=">Khabar magazine</a>. I was in very distinguished company, and I'm extremely thankful to Girija for inviting me to be part of it. You can read the (<i>very well written</i>) article <a href="http://www.khabar.com/magazine/features/Desi_Do-It-Yourself_DESIGNERS">here </a>(Girija, you rock!). </div>

Now on to the shout-out.....in case you follow <a href="http://www.artbyaarohi.com/blog/">Aarohi's blog</a>, you must be aware of the exciting new project she has been working on. She has teamed up with the not-for-profit organization, <i>The Voice of Stray Dogs</i> (VoSD), to launch a new line of home- and personal- accessories that will benefit the management and care of stray dogs in India. Many of you may be well aware of the plight of stray dogs in India; they are often victims of neglect and abuse. VoSD has come up with an actionable plan that offers animal birth control and road-hit/accident attention and recuperation services. Aarohi will be donating half the proceeds from the sale of her new line to the VoSD animal birth control and recovery efforts. You can read more on Aarohi's blog here. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On a personal note, I have to say I am totally in awe of <a href="http://www.artbyaarohi.com/blog/">Aarohi's</a> zeal and determination in carrying out this project. Working within the limitations of several personal challenges that she has been facing, she has devoted weeks of her time to this (almost) lost cause. If you are an animal lover, a dog lover or even simply a civic-minded person, I'm sure you must be excited to see what the <b><i>Poonchh </i>collection</b> has to offer. (Translation: <i>poonchh </i>is tail in Hindi. Think happy, waggy tails-- saying thank you for all <b><i>your </i></b>help!!) </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The following excerpt has been taken from her press notes; I hope it will lend some insight into the <i>Poonchh</i> Collection.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

As a matter of principle, she did not haggle with any of the craftsmen along the value chain. “Since this is for a good cause, I wanted the ‘vibe’ associated with each piece to be positive,” she smiles. </span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #6fa8dc;">
<br /></div>
<span style="color: #6fa8dc; font-size: small;"> </span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #6fa8dc;">
<span style="font-size: small;"><span lang="EN-IN" style="line-height: 115%;">Through the edgy, hip and very stylish <i>Poonchh </i>Collection, <b>Aarohi hopes to make stray dogs hip and stylish</b> too, a fashion statement in themselves. “I want people to carry the products around, and for the products to become a talking point,” says Aarohi. “Hopefully, that will set off a ripple effect, leading to increased awareness about strays, and translate eventually into better and more humanitarian care for the dogs.” It is for this reason that the <i>Poonchh </i>Collection is priced as reasonably as it is – <b>almost</b> <b>every piece is available for under Rs 2500. The paintings are priced at Rs.5000." </b></span></span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
February. Cold grey skies hung so low, threatening to erase the very memory of spring, of sunshine......Sound familiar? Wait! I know the perfect antidote! Come, sit by me, tuck your legs under, pull up that warm wooly throw, let me pour you a cup of comfort. Cup it in those near-frozen hands, let the warmth radiate through those porcelain walls....take a sip and tell me how your day went......</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Isn't it amazing that no matter which part of the world you call home, there is this undeniable comfort a cup of tea brings.....it's like this universal language that says, "Welcome! this is where you can feel at home." Offering a cup of tea is synonymous with hospitality across all cultures and each home in each part of the world has its own special spin on the way it is brewed, the way it is served.....me, I'll take it any way it is offered, whether in a <i>kullad </i>(for the uninitiated: these are single-fired clay tea glasses that lend the most heavenly, earthy aroma to the tea they hold) or Moroccan tea glass or in a porcelain cup with gilded handles........</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
With that in mind, I'd like to introduce to you a new series that I've been working on, where we will be dropping in on friends for a cup of tea and some <i>gupshup </i>(chit-chat). But before we do that, I'd like to invite you in, to our home, for a cup of tea....</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We love to entertain, my husband and I; we're not huge fans of crowds and our parties are almost always a rather intimate affair. Our fail-proof formula: one family or two at a time, loads of good homemade food, great conversation (that never seems to want to stop!), the sound of children playing, and of course, tea. Not just any tea, but special, brewed with magic, tea. Tea that will linger on in the memories of the imbiber (made that word up!), ensure that the next invitation to visit is accepted in a snap. :) Tea that has fully grown adults reaching down into the bottom of their now-empty cups, greedily scooping up the nutty morsels with their bare fingers (not making this up. it happens. each. and. every. time.) And that look of satisfaction in the end? that's the best hostess gift ever, knowing that the care and effort put into the evening was appreciated, savored. This magic tea originates in the cold mountain state of kashmir in India. It is called <i>kahwa</i>/<i>kehva </i>and is a kind of green tea, brewed with fragrant spices and a sprinkling of crushed or slivered nuts. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I first came across <i>kahwa </i>back in the early 90s and, smitten with the flavors, I hounded the chef for the recipe.....he gave me a small packet of the tea leaves and allowed me to watch while he prepared the next batch, in a huge silver <i>samovar </i>with hot coals in its belly. I was mesmerized and vowed to master the art of brewing it --thankfully, it was a deceptively simple technique, one that I've adapted to my small saucepan, on my tiny, not-so-glamorous stove burner. It makes for the perfect nightcap--mildly sweetened and fragrant with spices, it is the perfect way to end an evening with friends. You only need a few tea leaves (these are much larger than other green tea I've come across and 7-8 tea leaves easily fill half a teaspoon.) You can (could?) get these at the Kashmir emporium in Delhi and I think also at <i>Dilli haat</i>. If you know of any other sources, please do share in the comments field. The rest of the spices are ones that are easy to procure, most already available in our pantries....</div>

<br />
<br />
<br />
Recipe:<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
To brew this cup of comfort, you need:</div>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>¼ tsp Kashmiri green tea.</li>
<li> 3 green cardamoms.</li>
<li> ¼ inch cinnamon stick.</li>
<li> 2 cloves.</li>
<li> A generous pinch saffron.</li>
<li> 2 ½ cups water.</li>
<li> ½ tsp slivered (or crushed) nuts like almonds or walnuts.</li>
<li> A pinch of powdered ginger (soonth).</li>
<li> Two tsp sugar (optional). </li>
</ul>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
Brewing that perfect cup of <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">kahwa</i> is easy……place all the ingredients in a saucepan, bring to a rolling boil, reduce heat and allow the tea to simmer, with a lid on, for at least fifteen minutes. Or till your entire kitchen is filled with the fragrance of saffron and cinnamon and cardamom. Pour into teacups (traditionally, they use shallow, wide cups, much like the green tea cups from China or Japan.) Sprinkle an extra pinch of crushed nuts on top. Serve accompanied with bowls of dried fruits and nuts. Sit back and enjoy! </div>

How was your week? It's been a star-struck week for us here at P&P central......my little guy is participating in the school play (a two hour long adaptation of Annie) and I'm in awe of all the behind-the-scenes effort that has been put into its making. I have a renewed respect for sets and set designers--it has to take an awful lot of vision and hard work to put up something so transient, but oh, the results. In. Awe.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"> </div><div style="text-align: justify;">Speaking of star struck, did anyone catch the golden globes this week? I usually don't watch but we actually sat through the whole show this time-- this past year, we've watched a lot of movies, (mostly all through redbox), and it was fun to actually see some of our favorites get awards. One movie that we fell in love with was <a href="http://focusfeatures.com/beginners">Beginners</a>. If you've seen it you probably know why I loved it--from the sunny home it was set in to the actors--Ewan McGregor (adorable!), Christopher Plummer (probably the performance of a lifetime!), Melanie Griffith (girl crush, anyone?), Cosmo (want to adopt him!), to the score (love love love the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLF5360C77FEE40D8A">theme suite</a>) to the story (finally figured out why it had such a genuine ring to it--it was based on the director's parents, there's nothing like having lived through a story to lend authenticity to the narrative.) Anyhoo, I thought I'd poke around the net to see if there were any screengrabs from the movie--the set was amazing, part of an actual home (a family actually lives there, and the kitchen wasn't touched up for the movie. How do I know this? I found an article on Elle Decor--they had done <a href="http://www.elledecor.com/decorating/articles/beginners-luck">a piece on the beginners movie and set</a>. Bazinga!) The artwork and sculptures you see scattered around the home actually belonged to the director's parents (told you it was authentic!) Here's a look at the set.........</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BbAwiniT99k/TxsWg9mgifI/AAAAAAAACvw/f5Had4oJItM/s1600/01-beginners-movie.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BbAwiniT99k/TxsWg9mgifI/AAAAAAAACvw/f5Had4oJItM/s400/01-beginners-movie.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;">Credit: <a href="http://www.elledecor.com/decorating/articles/beginners-luck">Elle Decor</a>.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">It actually looks so much better in the movie, hope you get to catch it. While I am on the topic of amazing on-screen sets, have you seen the interiors in the sitcom the big bang theory? When I'm not busy laughing my head off (funniest. show. ever.) I love ogling at the sets--so many furnishings are actually identifiable as being from Anthroplogie, but I just love the feel of their homes--especially the couch-rug-bookcase combo in Leonard/Sheldon's apartment. And how amazing is the giant double helix? I want. (I'm not really going to put any pictures/links in here, because I'm sure everybody and their grandmother already watch the show........)</div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
Do you have any favorite on-screen homes? What about in hindi movies? I think I've shared this one earlier, but just because I'm repetitive sometimes (<span style="font-size: x-small;">he heh</span>), here it is once again.......</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

<br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Do share your favorites too.....<br />
<br />
Hope you're having a great weekend, see you here tomorrow with the third object in my series of fifty two. Till then, be good....... :)<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Hello there, dear reader! How was the first week of the new year? Mine was quite busy--along with the usual weekday madness, I had to eke out time for appointments with the mechanic--yes, the new year came with car trouble. I'm not complaining though, as long as things can be fixed (and stay fixed) it's all okay. The week was surprisingly productive (mostly mundane, but essential tasks) and with the satisfaction of having tackled that to-do list, I'm quite pleased with myself and ready to <i><b>go</b></i>!......Which brings me to the post on hand. Some of you may be familiar with the <a href="http://www.themarionhousebook.com/category/fifty-two-objects/">52 Objects</a> series on Emma's blog, <a href="http://www.themarionhousebook.com/"><i>The Marion House Book</i></a>. I've always admired the series--I was hooked from the first day I stumbled across her blog, sometime in the summer of '11. It's a beautifully composed narrative strung out over the 52 weeks of a year-- in it, each week, Emma picks one object from her life and shares the story behind it. Over the course of the past year, she's (un)covered the secret lives of her favorite possessions, each rich with personal history, fragrant with memories. Thank you for the inspiration, Emma!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Starting this week, I plan on sharing some of my personal favorites with you--some breathtakingly beautiful, some crumpled beyond recognition, some pristine, some marked with scars.........each, a beloved object from my life. It's an ambitious project, one that will require a degree of dedication that I've struggled to bring to this blog in the past year. Hopefully this will remedy that! Wish me luck, my loves, and then join me on this journey as I do what I love to do--dig through my memories for stories to share.....</div>

So here it is, the first of 52........</div>

<i><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i> Dear all, thank you so much for your lovely words on this post. This painting is a favorite of mine, for obvious reasons, but I really need to do a post on my mother's art. She's quite old now, and hasn't picked up a paintbrush in many years, but I made sure that she got to read all the comments on this post. She thanks you all and wants everyone to know that this painting isn't an original, it was a copy of something she'd seen in an illustrated weekly. (That's my mom in a nutshell, always the perfectionist.) (Just FYI, there are plenty of originals scattered throughout my parent's home, and in homes of friends and family members around the globe.) I need to write that post, it's an emotional subject for me to write on, especially now that I better understand what she gave up to build her family. I'll get to it, maybe just not yet.</i><i> <br />
Thank you for all the love!<br />

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Oht_a8Rt7_g/TwJCwhaZ9ZI/AAAAAAAACqw/ERG9iQCZDSs/s1600/DSCN4123.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Indian decor, Indian style, Chai, Adrak chai, Flower arrangement, Indian textile" border="0" height="524" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Oht_a8Rt7_g/TwJCwhaZ9ZI/AAAAAAAACqw/ERG9iQCZDSs/s640/DSCN4123.JPG" title="Flowers and ginger chai" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
How is the new year treating you dear reader? It was a quiet day for me today, filled with mood music and comfort food--partying is all very well, but at the end of the day <span style="font-size: x-small;">(make that 10 madcap days! Oh, may I vent a little? What is it about karaoke that makes sane, balanced, human beings sound like hyenas? my poor ears. As far as I'm concerned magic sing and its ilk belong on top of the list of things we should eradicate! OK. Exhale. whew.)</span> I think there's nothing more nourishing to the body (and soul) as a simple meal. :) Just like a good warm cup of <i>chai </i>is the perfect antidote to winter! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Speaking of chai, do you have any special recipe for the perfect cup of tea? Do share--I plan on sharing some recipes from my kitchen this year.....no, I'm not going to start a food blog, because <i>Of Peacocks and Paisleys</i> seems to have evolved into its own (totally organic!!!) blend --a bit of lifestyle, a pinch of decor, the occasional foodie post, a little bit about my life. If I'd tried, I couldn't have planned it better-- I'm really pleased with what is up here. I do plan on enhancing some aspects-- I used to love sharing home-tours with you and I didn't do a single one in all of 2011. (what???!!??) (there's an embarrassing story in there, but I'll skip that bit for now. ) Anyway, that needs to be repaired, pronto! I also loved inviting my friends over--the "My kinda Gal" series was total soul-food. And believe me, I hadn't even begun to scratch the surface yet--there are so many awesome, inspiring women I'd love to invite to this space--hopefully I'll be able to get that series started up again. In other news, I'm planning on taking a page (quite literally!) out of my friend <a href="http://soundhornplease.blogspot.com/">Divya's blog</a> and creating some links to the absolutely wonderful cache of talent out there. I find, as life becomes busier, it is a little more difficult for me to work on designer profiles; and much as I'd like to come in with both guns firing, I've found myself battling severe writer's block when it comes to these posts.....unfortunately, when I don't follow through on my promises it's not good for my morale (or reputation!) One of my resolutions is to not fight myself and just accept things the way they are. I'm sticking with what comes naturally and not pushing it anymore. So, like I was saying, I love <a href="http://soundhornplease.blogspot.com/">Divya's</a> solution and I'm unabashedly copying her idea. (Thanks, D!--you're the best!) The links page is under construction and will be up shortly. I'll try to update it each month, so please be sure to check often!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
From where I sit, the year stretches out in front of me, full of promise. It's almost impossible to stop plans from swirling about in my head......while 2011 was good to me on the personal front, my poor blog baby got ignored a bit. No more. I'm hoping this new year will bring with it many exciting collaborations on this blog; I want to make it a little more interactive--some new series, a few new features, a little more of everything. Maybe some reader requests? I received a few via email this past year, which I responded to in person, but maybe we could do that on the blog? I have <i>just </i>the post to start that series off! (Did you realize that I was actually thinking out loud just then--I love that I'm so comfortable "talking " to you that I can let slip the <strike>voices </strike>voice in my head. )</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><b>Big</b></span> plans. The <i><b>hope </b></i>for action (LOL!). That's all it takes to put a smile on my face. ;)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What's making you happy today?</div>

<br />
<br />
<br />
Dear 2011, <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: x-large;"> W</span>e had a good run, you and I. You started on the right note; I managed a long <a href="http://gb73.blogspot.com/2011/02/hello-i-missed-you-all.html">overdue trip home</a>, basked in the warm Delhi sun. Spent much-needed <a href="http://gb73.blogspot.com/2011/02/on-february-spring-reflections-and.html">time with loved ones</a>, came away satiated and content. But you had a few more surprises in store for me -- in a flourish of your time-heals-all wand, you <a href="http://gb73.blogspot.com/2011/06/its-been-while.html">brought me</a> <a href="http://gb73.blogspot.com/2011/09/hello-is-it-me-youre-looking-for.html">back home</a> (to my home away from home); thank you for that. Much of this year has gone in re-connecting with old friends, rekindling just-begun friendships that had seen a premature end, and in making new friends. It's been a time to revel in the beauty of the nature that surrounds us, so carefully preserved by the hard work and vision of those entrusted with the responsibility. I see around me an Earth that we inherited, as it was intended, unmarred by industrialization and callous minds. In that, I'm grateful to the events (fate? destiny? determination?) that brought us here. I enter 2012 with a renewed resolve to do whatever I can-- to do my bit in preserving the beauty of this planet. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have some high expectations of you, 2012. Please be <i>better</i>, <i>faster</i>, <i>stronger</i>. You know. But don't lose sight of the simple joys please. I have big plans, both on the personal and professional front. Please be the year that stands by me. Move forward, albeit gently. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And gentle reader, for you, I wish that the year brings happiness, in whatever form you wish it. Here's to the health and continuing well-being of your families (and mine!), to sunny days, grassy fields and clear waters (a healthy planet!), to laughter, and to friendships. To goals met and checklists <i>checked</i>. May 2012 be <i>the </i>year. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And while I'm jabbering on about High Expectations, would world peace be too much of a stretch? <i>Sabko buddhi do bhagwaan</i>? Here, then, is to the rise in collective intellect and the dawn of wisdom. May this be <i>the </i>year.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Go on 2012, be awesome. You know you want to. ;)</div>

Signing off (with a heart full of hope),</div>

This year, I decided to customize the labels for my thank you gifts. They're not very holiday-themed as there are a ton of printables out there, and I wanted the labels to really stand out. I used regular card stock to print these labels on; the original prints were made using the wooden blocks and scanned to create digital facsimiles. I think they came out rather well don't you?</div><br />
<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FI-d433T8X0/TupfUgX9cDI/AAAAAAAACqY/k6LhMa9kyzs/s1600/Picture1.png" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FI-d433T8X0/TupfUgX9cDI/AAAAAAAACqY/k6LhMa9kyzs/s800/Picture1.png" /></a></div><br />

Accompanying them will be the recipe cards you see above. For the vegetarians, there will be parcels of home made cookies (with accompanying recipe cards). </div><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">And while I'm making goodies for friends I can see and touch, I can't very well forget you can I, dear reader? I thought you might like to use some pretty labels too. Actually, since they're not very holiday theme-y, you can use them for other occasions as well. So here you go, my sweets---make sure you download the original file for the full resolution images. (It's a pdf file, 168 kb in size, so it won't take up much space.) </div><br />

Dear reader, I'm issuing a disclaimer for this post, so know that you're reading at your own risk. This would be the kind of stuff that pours out after you've had "one too many" of your choice of poison, but the strange thing is that as I sit here writing this, the sun is shining outside and I'm as clear-headed as I'll ever be. (dry eyed? maybe not, but clear headed for sure. ) What's that you say? bah, humbug? you were warned.</i></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">That time of the year again, tying up loose ends, trying to make sure that I start the new year with a clean slate, my list of to-dos from the whole year waiting to be crossed, one line at a time. Luckily for me, the list is mostly one of gratitude; thank yous to people who stood by us. Those who brought smiles to our faces, just with the shared memories of beautiful conversations. Small acts of kindness, that warm the heart even now, months and years since. It's a long list, (yes, I know. we're blessed.) It's a month that's jam packed with catching up with friends, re-connecting lives one last time before 2012 rolls along. Little bundles of love, most of my gifts this year are handmade, tailor-made for the recipients. Far more rewarding than getting those lack-luster gift cards at the checkout. This is a group of extraordinary ordinary people and they deserve so much better. I'm glad I had the opportunity (and time!) this year to actually do things I'd never had time for earlier. It lends to closure in one sense , but also leads to new beginnings. And I love it all. I'm ending this year with a heart full of gratitude and warmth, something I hadn't experienced earlier and it's a beautiful feeling. Do you know what I mean?</div><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">Of course you do! A huge part of that circle of friends has to be you dear reader. I know I haven't always done right by you and that I've been an errant blogger, but there you are, like a loyal friend, your support all around me. Thank you. (I'll hold off on the promises, though.)</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The rest of December promises to be spent in a whirl of get-togethers, holiday parties and snatched cups of <i>chai</i>. For those who are too far away to sit across a table from, there are emails and letters and phone conversations. There are also plans for the future, the euphoria of new beginnings. Twenty eleven didn't start out the best, but it sure did end right. Here's to the rest of 2011 holding up to the tempo and to 2012 aiming to outdo it. ;)</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">PS: In case you're wondering if this is the last post for 2011 from P&P, it's not. I have a slate to wipe clean remember? That means a flurry of posts as I clear the backlog on those half-written drafts. Yes <i><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UygiBWXTO0">I'm working on the rewrite.</a>.</i>....</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Picture: The upstairs landing at home, right outside the master bedroom. Don't get much sun here, hence the lighting issues.</div></div>GBhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09663791299848516601noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6334244789326995358.post-43990306086126066792011-11-30T09:54:00.000-05:002011-11-30T09:54:48.847-05:00Happy middle-of-the-week-day......<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div style="text-align: justify;">Happy Today, gentle reader! Wondering why I'd no-show you all week and then turn up on a random wednesday? I really have no answer, other than I'm sorry for the sporadic posting........life is just a little busy at the moment (and, to paraphrase a dear friend, "Busy's good".) Just wanted to share some pictures of the sunlight-dappled view from my blogging chair....</div><br />

Or not. <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;"><blockquote class="tr_bq" style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><span style="font-size: large;">"My own life is full of these comparisons and contradictions. My father smears red paste on the forehead of small deities each morning. He sits cross-legged and sings along to devotional songs. I sit on a Herman Miller chair, use digital tools, and blare New Order songs, the whole while illustrating Hindu deities. He does his pujas twice a day and I try to do a little work before and after my day job every day. My father animates his faith through meditation and ritual. I use my Techincolor tools to reincarnate modern avatars. In my opinion we're both devoted and reverential, just in different ways, and for different reasons. We're also both continuing a tradition of art making and worship that stretches back thousands of years. What could be more common to the human experience?" </span></blockquote></div><div style="text-align: right;">-Sanjay Patel; quoted from <a href="http://www.asianart.org/maharaja/sanjay.htm">here</a>, in the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/30/us/an-ailing-asian-art-museum-embraces-pop-culture.html?_r=2">news</a> and at his <a href="http://www.gheehappy.com/">website</a>.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">Going off on a tangent, a whole host of cliches come to mind. "<i>Work is worship</i>" anyone? :) or perhaps, you'd like Khalil Gibran's <a href="http://www.katsandogz.com/onwork.html">version</a> of the sentiment? Whichever way you put it, you can't help but agree.</div></div><br />
<br />
And, a lovely video to go with those words (totally not related, but this is what I'm listening to as I'm putting together this post........) </div><br />
